CLEAN UP YOUR MESS

I have been studying for an exam that I have on Monday morning, and finishing a written assignment for the second class. This second written assignment is much easier than the first one from a few weeks ago—a series of summaries for some articles we were assigned to read, rather than a critique on a book. I’m emailing it to the professor early (Monday), rather than handing in a hard copy on Wednesday when it’s actually due. I’ll be able to head to London with everything taken care of, and then two new classes start the following Monday (Nov 1st).

Earlier today on my way to the university, I was walking on a stone-paved path that winds through the trees behind where I live. It’s a short-cut to get both to the tram stop and the main road, and most of the students use it. Sometimes I also see older couples, or people jogging, walking with dogs, kids on bikes (surprising!)—so apparently it is well used. I have never actually seen anyone on a horse, but that is the only explanation for the huge pile of—excuse me for this—crap that was in the middle of the path today. And the path doesn’t do a lot of twisting and turning, most of its length being one straight stretch, which means that I could see the crap for quite some time before I reached (and carefully stepped around) it.

Apart from the one huge crap-pile, there were smaller piles extending for the next ten feet or so after that. I find that very rude. I understand that the horse’s owner wouldn’t be able to take a “pooper-scooper” along with him/her like dog owners in cities do…but in that case, wouldn’t it be better to stick to less well-traveled areas?

I’m almost wishing for a few good torrential downpours to come along and clean up the mess.

  1. It’s only grass. Leave it a while, and it will be just like dried grass. Now try to imagine the middle age: mud, animal and human refuse 1 foot deep on the streets; a hot summer, myriads of flies, everyone unwashed…
Now was that little pile of horse crap really so bad?

  5. People can clean up behind horses, even if they have to carry a shovel with them. The horse can carry the extra weight. But the person has to want to do the bit of work. If no one was even supposed to ride horses there, they may have found it the better part of valor to ride on and leave the surprise present behind. Bad manners is bad manners, though.
