WANTED: BLOGUMENTARY

I think someone should make a blogumentary, and it’s not just because I like watching documentaries. Someone has already made a Blogumentary film, but it’s not the kind of format I’m talking about. That guy’s film explains blogging, but it doesn’t follow the bloggers.

It could be difficult to get people involved, since some popular bloggers are private and wouldn’t voluntarily invite a camera into their lives. But I bet there are enough people out there who would be willing to do it, to make it interesting.

Imagine this: a blogumentary that follows a number of popular bloggers (and some not-so-popular bloggers who write about a variety of genres). We find out where they live, what makes them tick. What their workspaces look like. And the blogumentary should also cover a large conference or two, like SXSW or BlogHer.

All those bloggers in one place at the same time! They’re an immensely diverse group of people, but they all unite with a common interest. Imagine how many different in-person answers you could get to question of “Why do you blog?” and “What are your secrets to success?” These topics have been covered many times in blog posts, but it would be nice to see them answered on-camera, where you could watch people’s faces as they answered.

I couldn’t put this together because I have neither the technical know-how nor the contacts, but can you imagine how much fun it would be to travel around, interviewing and documenting bloggers’ lives? That’s something I’d like to see.

  1. What a great idea! I would definitely go and see this, too. If someone does it, I’d want you to get a piece of the proceeds, though. :)

  2. hmmm, i think you’d need some kind of angle to focus on. i think for most people who are good bloggers, their blogs are more interesting than anything you’d see from following them around. i know for myself, the reason i like blogging is that i’m so much better at expressing myself this way. the most interesting thing you’d probably get out of filming me is to note the contrast in how much more boring and incoherent i am in real life.

one angle that i think could be interesting is looking at how their blogging impacts their “real lives.” including the more obvious stuff like how it gives them social and business contacts but also how blogging impacts how they communicate “off blog,” whether it’s changed their relationship with the people they are close to, etc. it could also explore that contrast between who you are online and who you really are in “real life.”

  3. Sounds interesting. I would watch it. I live two completely different lives. The blogger and then my real life. I like the page as a form of self-expression, though I’m sure no one would want to know this author spends most of her days as a student and clinician.

But I guess, that is what is so intriguing about blogsville, I suppose.

  4. That’s an interesting idea. I would definitely watch it. It’s funny how some popular bloggers have the celebrity status in blog ville. Your documentary would be a bit like watching MTV crib. Or whatever it’s called :)

  5. I love watching shows like that – shows about people’s lives. Which is why I loved Newlyweds.

    Shush. Don’t laugh.

I keep trying to figure out how to get MY OWN reality TV show, but apparently I’ll need to move to Hollywood to be discovered first. ;)

  6. I think that this is a really fascinating idea. I find myself most engaged with bloggers who are writing about their lives as well as the blog ‘topic.’ And there are many about whom I’d love to know more.

  7. I’m ditto-ing on the interesting response! I wonder how many people would want to be involved in something like that? I like the international aspect of blogging – that I can get online and read all about what’s going on all over the place, written by different people in different time zones.

    Tis fascinating!

  8. I think I am way more interesting on my blog than I am in real life-… but that’s just me!
I’m sure someone would have a go at it!

  9. Interesting idea! It would definately be fun to watch bloggers go about their “real” lives.

  11. I think the world would be truly horrified to discover how much time I spend at the computer in my bathrobe…..

  12. Yes, that is a great idea. A friend and I talked about this a week ago. We thought that Oprah should do a show or write about it in her O magazine – how blogging connects women from different backgrounds, from around the world, to one another.

  13. Good Idea – wish I had the know how.

I liked the angle Jen suggested. I just started blogging – and aside from feeling like I am beginning to find community with other creative people- I can see other ways it is affecting my life. I pay more attention to life as it is happening, and because I am writing more (even if it is not all on my blog)about how I think and feel I find myself more articulate out in the “spoken word” world.

  14. I would love to see your idea realized.
There are several bloggers I follow who I would love to actually see and hear.
    See you next week.
