On Sunday I went to two Smithsonian museums (I’m working my way through the five I need to visit before I can cross off #61 on my 101 Things list). I asked my friend K.T. to go with me—not because I thought he needed culture, but because he’s hilarious and I knew he would be good company.
We went to the Air & Space Museum first, which I’ve been to several times but the last time was at least 10 years ago. The most interesting part (because I’m not really all that interested in planes and spaceships) was that they have a temporary American history exhibit set up while the actual American History museum is undergoing renovations. They had things like Dorothy’s ruby slippers from the Wizard of Oz, one of Mr. Rogers’ sweaters, and C-3PO and R2-D2.
Our second stop was the Museum of the American Indian, recommended by both Barry and Jen in this post. Both of them had mentioned the fabulous food offerings available in the museum café, so I made sure to make it our lunch stop—and it didn’t disappoint. I had a black bean tamale with blue corn/mango salad (very good), and K.T. had a buffalo burger (which he said tasted like a regular hamburger).
That afternoon, to redeem ourselves of the whole going-to-museums-on-Sunday thing, we went to the movies and saw Shrek the Third. (Opinion: funny, but there were a few parts that moved kind of slow. Didn’t like it as much as the first two.)
K.T. prefers to remain anonymous so I won’t post a photo of his face, but I just remembered I have this one of him. (By the way, that piece of paper hanging on the wall behind his head is his law school degree. And he passed the bar exam on his first try. He’s very smart.)
The photo was taken this past January, on the night we had a going-away party for him because he was leaving to take a job at another company. K.T. was hanging his head because the person attempting to take the picture had apparently never operated a digital camera before, and at the exact moment we gave up and lost our smiling poses, the picture was taken. I believe K.T.’s exact words at that moment were, “Oh, God” (one of his favorite phrases).
I’m in the purplish shirt, and I cropped myself out because I was in the middle of saying something like, “Hey, dummy, don’t you know how to use a digital camera?” (But in the nicest possible way, of course.) Co-worker J.R. was cropped from the other side because I don’t have her permission to post her photo on the internet, and since she drops by here occasionally I thought she was likely find out. And she was the only one who actually looked normal.
(**Update: This is K.T.’s version of our Sunday excursion.)

What did you think overall of the National Museum of the American Indian? I love the exterior, but wished they had more historical info in the exhibits. Totally agree though on the cafe!
How cool that you went to the museums!
That picture is hilarious!
Thank you for not mentioning that I thought the ruby slippers were related to the National Air and Space museum, and that they were there because they helped Dorothy fly from Oz to Kansas.
That picture is so funny, I really like what I can see of your purple shirt!
I too saw Shrek the Third this weekend and liked it, but agree that parts were slow, especially in the beginning, but you know me and babies, at the end I was saying “awwwww” and smiling! Yes, I even love ogre babies.
You are seriously kicking ass on your 101 Things – good for you!
I saw Shrek the Third this weekend too. I have not seen the first two. I was not impressed. AND I had to sit in a theatre full of gabby kids.
