About Me

And Then She Turned 27

For my 26th birthday last year, I asked people who knew me personally to leave a comment with a favorite memory, and for those who didn’t know me to just say something nice. (This birthday also happened to fall on the final weekend I spent in California before I moved back to Virginia — I had lived there just a few weeks shy of a year.)

This year I want to know:

If you’re older than 27: something significant that happened to you at that age.

If you’re younger than 27: something you hope to have accomplished by your 27th year.

(In unrelated news, did you know…? 27 is the age at which many famous rock musicians have died, and is sometimes referred to as the 27 Club.)

And it is my age today, as of 12 noon.

I have a feeling year #27 is going to be a good one.

That was the year my husband and I bought our house. That was also the year we adopted our dog from the animal shelter. ๐Ÿ™‚

When I’m 27, I hope I have put a down payment of a real HOUSE that I can call mine, whether it be sharing it with a partner (hopefully J!) or on my own.

Wishing you lots of birthday thoughts, because it’s already tomorrow over here. ๐Ÿ˜‰

    I am 27 so I guess I’ll do both:

Something significant: I got accepted to law school.

Something to accomplish: I’d like to lose the 6 pounds I gained during the six months that robotics forced me to eat at fast food joints/touristy restaurants/bars after room checks/Pat’s Cheesesteaks/Chicken and Waffles……

    Happy, happy 27th to you!

    Happy Birthday!

27 is 2 years and 4 months away for me. By that time, I better have achieved candidate status in my PhD program and be well on my way to my dissertation defense.

Other than that, the I can only think of some not-so-controllable stuff. I’d like to be in a promising relationship by then. I’d also like to have taken another international adventure, but that’s highly dependent on my school schedule.

My bigger goals are that I would like to earn my PhD before I turn 30 and that I’d like to be close to starting a family then too. And once I earn my PhD, I want to work on spending at least two years living abroad.

Dear zandria. I’m not older than 27, and I’m not younger either – I’m a fellow 1980-er. So I’ll leave you with what I did for my birthday – went back to Australia! The upside – wonderful weather, family and friends. The downside – Mr Moi was still in Ukraine.

Happy Birthday, Zan! I hope you have fun and great weather this weekend! And that you get lots of fab presents!

By my 27th birthday, it would be great if I were stable in some sort of career path or plan for graduate school. I would also like to have gone on a fabulous vacation by then…

    Happy Birthday Zan!

I am 15 months away from turning 27, I guess I would love to accomplish peace with self before I turn 27, and continue my pursuit..

Happy 27th Birthday! As a fellow 1980 baby, I have only been 27 for a little over a month. I was able to celebrate this year at a bed and breakfast with family, which was wonderful. I’m sure this year will be great for both of us! ๐Ÿ™‚

When I was 27, I had just finished grad school with my Masters of Public Health, ran my first half-marathon, and met my sweet boyfriend.

    Happy birthday Zan!
When I was 27, I joined Weight Watchers and lost over 40 pounds that I have not taken back since (I’ll turn 30 next month). This is something I am proud of, and I have enjoyed life in size 8 with pleasure since then.

I wish you all the best for this coming year!

it was also the year i stopped wearing wool, which was my last step in becoming vegan.

I am one year and about two weeks from 27. I’d say by then I’d like to have a house or condo that we own. Mostly, I just want to decorate ๐Ÿ™‚

Hope you’re having a great time celebrating!

26 to 27 were the happiest years of my life, though admittedly it was due to an illicit relationship (married woman) that later turned (my fault) to screaming hell.

Happy birthday, Zan! I don’t remember my 27th birthday – that was almost 10 years ago! I hope your 27th year is a great one. ๐Ÿ™‚

Happy Birthday Zan! I’m 27. I turn 28 in July. This was a weird year for me. Not bad or good, just weird. Marty hates it when I say weird. He wants more of a concrete definition. But I can’t really put my finger on it. Maybe it’s because nothing big happened this year. I think it’s also partly because I read Healthy at 100 and I feel my own mortality. At best, I’ve already lived 1/4th of my life. It’s going by too fast. I really do feel old.

Happy B-Day, Dear Zan! All I remember is that it was pretty nice being under 30. No worries. Have a great day! ๐Ÿ™‚

eek, you reminded me that I am too old to remember what happened when I was 27. But I hope you have a REALLY wonderful day. 27 is so young. ~sigh. I would love to be that age again.

I turned 27 last year in August.

My 27th year has been a busy one, I moved to a new state, bought my first house and took a major step upwards in my career.

    Happy Birthday!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Something significant on my 27th? I got pregnant with Tim. That was pretty significant. Though I started showing after I turned 28.

I started my blog when I was 27.
I lived my first full year in Maine as 27.
27 was my first full year not being a teacher.
I got my beautiful dog Adeline when I was 27.
    A truly fabulous year.
    Happy Birthday!!!!
I am sure yours will be super.

27 was a good year for me professionally. Got a couple of promotions. Also decided to move back to Montreal. ;0 (ok, I squeaked that in during the last week I was 27 but, you know…lol) Got reconnected with a part of me I thought I had lost.

    Overall a good year.

    happy birthday!

I’ll be 29 in August. When I was 27, my husband and I got married in Las Vegas! Our ceremony was held in the Mandalay Bay Chapel.

That was a great year for me!

    Best Wishes to you!

At 27 I moved from a small town to what seemed like a HUGE city, to take a new job within the phone company…now, many years later, I see that the large town I moved to is, by worldly standards, little more than a berg itself…but you know, with age comes wisdom! ๐Ÿ™‚

    Happy (belated) birthday!

I’m 27 myself, though I’m a 1979 baby. Now that I’m pushing 28 (my birthday is in August), I can say that 27’s not a bad year at all (at least if you’re not a hard-partying rock musician). Enjoy it! ๐Ÿ™‚

Following Janet’s example, I’ll answer *both* questions:

While I’ve been 27, my husband and I bought our first home and celebrated our first anniversary.

Before 27: At age 22, I decided I needed a change in my life, so I applied to grad school on the other side of the country. Taking a leap of faith, moved from Arizona to D.C. without a job or a clear plan for how I was going to make all this work. And it’s one of the best things I ever did.

Best wishes for a wonderful year ahead!

  • Reply Alyson June 11, 2007 at 12:02 am

Aack … I misread the second question as something significant that happened *before* age 27.

My goal, then, should be to make sure I read things fully before I post answers to them. ๐Ÿ™‚

What happened when I was 27 -> many things but morst important, by relationship with Pim !
Before 27 -> having to spent a year in Virginia and meeting many interesting people: among them YOU !!

    Happy Belated Birthday!!

When I was 27 I decided I wanted to start applying to get my Masters in Immunology of Infectious Diseases, and in the fall of that year I moved to London, England to start it.

It was a big change, but I LOVE it!!

I am a year and a half away from 27. By then I’d like to working on my Masters.

I guess I fall in the older then 27 category ๐Ÿ™‚

I’m 28 now and will be 29 next month.

Let’s see, when I was 27 I got out of the call center I had been working in for over 6 years and got another much better job at the same company.
