RANDOM FRIDAY, VER. 19

1) I went to a firing range for the first time this week and shot several guns. (This was after I updated my 101 Things list, but yes, I’d already had it in mind as something I was going to do. It just seemed more interesting than taking a tour of the White House.) The first gun was very small, the second one was bigger, and the third was a rifle.

(The problem with shooting the rifle was that my dominant eye is my left eye and I hold the gun on my right side, so it was hard for me to hold it in the correct position. When I held the rifle up higher so I could see through the sights, the force of the kick-back knocked the butt of the rifle into my shoulder (ow). So I only shot the rifle about three times.)

I did better than I thought I would; I was hitting the target all over the place, and most of the time it went where I wanted it to go. It’s something I’ve wanted to learn to do for a while — but I didn’t know if I’d be any good, so I didn’t try. I’m glad I decided to get over my nervousness. It was a lot of fun, and I’d definitely do it again.

2) Don’t you hate when you accidentally leave part of your lunch at home? If I was planning to bring soup and a sandwich to work, I’m not going to be happy with just the sandwich. I want my soup!

3) This might be shocking to some of you: I’m reading a book by Ann Coulter. She’s not my favorite person in the world, but a friend of mine owns the book and sort of challenged me to read it.

4) I’m feeling like a slacker today because I skipped my early-morning gym session. I had set my alarm for the normal time of 5:45am, but when I woke up, I just couldn’t do it. I’ve only been getting about five hours of sleep for the past few days, and I needed that extra hour of rest this morning.

  1. I think rifles are harder to fire but it is easier to hit something with them (after a bit of training and rifle ranges every year while I was in the Army). Pistols are easier to fire but way harder to hit anything with. It makes a big difference how firmly you have the butt of the rifle seated into your shoulder. If there’s any space in there then it can slam back into you and hurt. If you have it planted it will still push you back and may hurt but it won’t be as shocking. With pistols it all out there at the end of your arms and can wave all over the place, especially after a few hours of firing.

Of course this is all my opinion so ymmv.

Let us know whether Coulter can write coherently. I don’t read much of her stuff since she’s such as hateful person.

  2. Guns: I’m curious: why is shooting a gun “a lot of fun”, more so than, say, throwing darts at a target or shooting arrows at a target? (I don’t mean for this to sound like a challenge; I really am asking.)

Lunch: Yes, it’s SO annoying to leave it at home. It’s even more annoying to leave it at home on the counter (as opposed to in the ‘fridge), and then have to throw it away because it sat out all day.

Anne Coulter: There’s no reason to be apologetic or defensive for reading it. :-) It’s a good thing to read both sides of things, and to know what people you disagree with have to say.

  3. Good for you for crossing another thing off your list! Go Zan!

As for Coulter, I started reading Slander a while back, couldn’t really get into it, and then let a friend borrow it who never gave it back. I tend to read more fiction than nonfiction but will be curious to learn what you think of it.

That’ll make for an interesting future post for sure. :)

  4. The lunch thing happened to me a couple of time, but then I forgot the whole lunch! And I hate to eat those pre-packed sandwiches or crappy thing they sell around workplaces. I am so sorry for your soup!

About that book, does not read like something I’d like to read but sometimes it is good to open your horizons even if you disagree with the writer.

  6. Barry Leiba,

Why not try marksmanship for yourself and find out? It is a completely different experience from Archery. Granted, marksmanship is not for everyone. However, there is no harm in trying as long as you are instructed by a knowledgeable and safe individual.

  8. things to remember about guns: 1)always keep them pointed down and away from you. 2)if you shoot the weapon and it does not “fire”…lay it down and walk away from it…get someone who knows guns to check it out for you..the damaged or “cheap” ammo may explode..so dont open the weapon yourself. 3)dont ever “point” a weapon at someone that you dont or are not able to shoot. thats about it…..

  9. between the guns and Ann Coulter, this post is sounding so conservative, lol! No, I think it’s good to try new things, and the shooting range actually sounds fun to me too!
