RANDOM FRIDAY, VER. 22

1) Tomorrow I’ll be turning in the keys to my apartment; it’s the final day of my lease and I’m moving out. (Yes, it’s already been a year since I moved to Alexandria. Pretty crazy.)

Where am I going? For the time being, I’m moving in with my friend K.T. (You know, the former co-worker who displays orange glo-balls on his desk, takes me to get my eyes lasered, and accompanies me to museums.) I realized I didn’t know where I wanted to move at the end of my lease, so I approached him with the “Hey, care for a roommate?” question, and he was kind enough to agree to take me in. So I’ll be moving in with K.T. this weekend.

2) For the past several months, I’ve been noticing these random small bruises that show up near the top of my right thigh. They’re always on the right side, always in the same general area, and sometimes there’s more than one. I couldn’t figure out where they were coming from for the longest time, but I finally realized what was happening when I walked through a metro turnstile recently. (It’s not exactly a turnstile, but I’m not sure of the right term — it’s a contraption where you swipe your card and then two hard-plastic pieces retract on either side so you can walk through.) Apparently I’m an impatient, fast walker (really?!?!) and I lead with my right leg. When I don’t wait long enough for the pieces to retract, I slam my thigh as I walk through. Mystery solved.

3) A little thing to make me happy: Tired of using a disposable paper cup, I finally brought my favorite coffee mug to work. Since leaving my last job where I didn’t go to work until the afternoon (which means I was able to enjoy my morning cup of coffee at home), I’d only been using it on the weekends. My friends Chris and Teresa gave it to me last year when I moved up here to northern Virginia, and it makes me just a little bit happier every time I use it. Funny how that happens.

4) Speaking of coffee: even though I didn’t want to do so, I’ve been drinking more and more caffeine recently. Instead of getting more sleep like I know I need to do, I’ve upped my coffee intake from 1-2 cups a day to more like 3, plus there’s usually a can of diet soda somewhere in there. I hate that I have to do it to stay alert — and I’ve read all that info about coffee giving you a temporary “high” that drops you right back down a short time later — but I just can’t stop myself.

  1. Wait, what? This is the first I’ve heard of this. I was wondering where my spare keys went.

I like my 3-minute eggs boiled for exactly 2 minutes and 45 seconds in the morning, except on weekends, when I’d rather have them boiled for 2 minutes and 55 seconds. It’ll take you a little while to acclimate to the new regime, but I’ll give you a couple of weeks to get the schedule down.

    Welcome to the monkey house.

  2. the worst is when you are walking immediately behind someone so that the turnstile thingies are open as you approach, and you swipe your smart trip and continue through the open turnstile without slowing down without realizing that your card didn’t swipe properly and you slam both thighs into the turnstile thingies as they close directly in front of you.

  3. 2) Since they don’t “turn”, I would just call them “stiles”. Or you could go with “gates”.

    3) I’ve had a selection of mugs in the office for many years, and never use disposable cups. I’m always surprised when I see people using their own mugs for the first cup in the morning, and then taking disposable ones later. Reduce waste: bring your own cups/mugs, and use them always.

(I even bring a travel mug when I fly, and use that instead of disposable cups in the plane and at my destination.)

  4. Is KT cute? Is there anything between you and him? If he is cute, and if you’re friends with him, it’s hard to see how you two could just be platonic roommates. Still, I suppose anything’s possible.

  5. 1. congrats on being out of the place! Please tell me you’re going to write a great letter to management once you get your security deposit back.

    2. When I used to work at the ballpark, I had strange bruises on the outside of each thigh. I finally figured out that the bruises were the exact height of the arm rests at Safeco Field. Since the aisles slightly curve, but appear straight, I’d often walk down an aisle and bash into at least one or two armrests. I used to think I was mad accident prone, but now that I don’t work there, I don’t get mysterious bruises.

    3. I’ve got one of those Starbucks travel mug things, and I love it. Less waste, more happy. Glad you’re enjoying using the mug at work :-) Maybe you could pick up a second mug for cheap so that you still have one to use at home on the weekends (or, you know, steal one of KT’s).

    4. Everyone says this. I’m so glad I don’t drink coffee. I’ve tried to make a habit out of drinking tea, but it never sticks. My “wakeup” habit is surfing the internet. Hmm, maybe coffee would be quicker after all.
