RANDOM FRIDAY, VER. 24

1) Earlier this week, there was a fire at a dry cleaners next to the building where I work. It happened early in the morning, around 6am, but they still weren’t letting anybody in my building when I got there at 8:45. A group of co-workers had gathered in a deli next door, and we waited there for another 2.5 hours before the fire marshal showed up and said it was okay for everybody to go inside.

2) Even though the weather is cooling off, it doesn’t seem quite right for an apartment community to switch from air conditioning to heat in the middle of October. Cool air often doesn’t make its way through window screens, especially in apartments where windows tend to be along one side of the living space — it’s impossible to get any cross-ventilation.

3) I’m sure this happens at every gym, but there’s a woman I see all the time who clutches the front of her treadmill with a death grip as she runs. Her legs are pumping, but her arms are locked in place as she appears to hang on to the machine for dear life. I mean, if you can’t stand the speed, shouldn’t you slow it down?

  1. Oh, Zandria, number three DRIVES ME UP THE WALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you for shedding light on my major frustration at the YMCA. There is one guy who does that and he pisses me off so much I cannot get on a machine where I can catch sight of him.

    GRRR!

  2. One last note, do they think we are all impressed because they are “running” fast? Uh, dude, you’re holding on for dear life.

Oh yeah. And I’m not impressed.

  3. I think I have told you, I used to live up your way. We lived in downtown Crystal City from 95-97, when it was dead on the weekends. Anyway, we lived in the Lenox Club and the Bennington, the Bennington would turn there air off early and not turn it on well into May/June. We went to Best Buy and bought a small window air conditioner and put it on the balcony where they couldn’t see it. Put some plastic over the top so all the air wouldn’t go outside. It worked great!!! They never knew.

    been there, done that

  4. also with #3 — they’re not supporting their whole weight, so they really aren’t getting a great workout.

Another related pet peeve are the girls who are going to fast on the elliptical that they are slipping everywhere or banging the movey bits; they obviously don’t have the resistance turned up enough. And then they give me looks for not going fast at all. Um, hi? Do you have your resistance at 12? Oh, okay, thought not.
