I have recently eliminated some of the source of my busy-ness but I think I will always like having a lot of things going at once. I do, however, have my down time where I do nothing but veg and watch Oprah. Those times are great as well.

i enjoy my downtime too. i have a lot of activities that i enjoy doing, but that only makes my downtime all the more important to me, otherwise i don't enjoy my activities because i'm so frazzled and tired. i purposefully structure my life to minimize the amount of time i spend on things i HAVE to do, maximize the time i spend on things i WANT to do, and still have plenty of time left over to rest so that i can enjoy my life and not feel like a chicken with its head cut off.

in that calculus of things, i consider watching tv to be downtime. the only thing that is downtimier is taking a nap. of course it's a waste of time, that's the point. if i were accomplishing something during that time, it wouldn't be restful. for me, watching tv is "wasting time" the same way sleeping is "wasting time."

Great post. I'm like you. I like to be occupied, but not necessarily busy. I used to be busy all the time, but when we moved to a new city and I got the chance to slow down, I took it. Now I enjoy calm more than frenzy.

When I was a teenager I let TV eat up way too much of my time and I really regret it. I am so happy that my husband and I never sit around at night and watch prime time TV. I feel like it's such a waste of time and so unfulfilling. Do I really want to waste away my life watching other fictional lives that are supposedly more interesting than mine? No thanks. I'd rather just try to make mine interesting enough that I enjoy living it.

<blockquote>Metropolitan D.C. was crowded in all directions, from major arteries to secondary roads, and as soon as I hit traffic I immediately wanted to be somewhere other than where I was (preferably at my destination, but that just wasn’t happening). I didn’t have the patience to join in.</blockquote>Yes, that's a problem I always had in the DC area. I <i>love</i> DC, but I just couldn't cope with the constant congestion. That might sound like an odd thing to come from someone who now lives an hour from Manhattan, but the traffic is much lighter up here, the congestion less, the general pace not as hectic. It's not all strip-malls here, as it is down there. We have no "Seven Corners", no Shirley <strike>Parking Lot</strike> Highway.

And there're lots of nice hills and hiking near my house. Ahhhhh....

Interesting post. I'm definitely a constantly busy person. I find I'm more content being exhausted than sitting at home resting/relaxing. Looks funny to even see this as I'm typing it but yeah, true true! It's not to say I don't ever like having those veg out days, but they are the exception and not the rule.

If I'm sitting at home, I usually find myself restless and wishing I was out and about experiencing something. Perhaps that's why I think networks like ABC and NBC putting their TV shows online is just genius. No more being chained to the TV or having to remember to set the VCR (for those like me who are DVR/TiVO-less).
