RANDOM FRIDAY, VER. 30

1) I’m going to a dance performance tonight at the Firehouse Theatre in Richmond. My longtime friend (and personal hair stylist), Jeremy, is part of the dance company. I’ve never been to one of these things before, so I’m looking forward to seeing him and the others perform.

2) There are only two full weeks remaining until Christmas, and I haven’t bought one single gift yet. I’m hoping to get some ideas from family members this weekend about what they might like. I’m not very good at making gift-decisions.

3) The DC region was named the most walkable in the U.S. I just love places with high walk scores.

4) LJ left a comment yesterday, saying she’d tried making the recipe for graham cracker balls that I posted last week. She had a few issues (but I don’t believe it was the recipe’s fault, I might add). Issue #1 was that she hurt her hands while crushing the graham crackers. I’m not sure what method Mom used to use, but I’m positive it wasn’t her hands. (I’m thinking she used something heavy, like a mallet, with a cloth covering the graham crackers so the broken bits wouldn’t fly up and get all over the place?) Issue #2 was that the chocolate didn’t melt properly, but she used the microwave instead of the stove. Still, I’m impressed that LJ tried it!

5) Have I mentioned that the girl I’ll soon be living with is a vegan? I went through the whole vegan experiment last December, which was then extended a few months, and then I started eating certain kinds of meat again this past summer (chicken, turkey, seafood). She knows I eat meat though, so I don’t think we’ll have any problems unless I try to force-feed her something she doesn’t want (which of course wouldn’t happen).

Have a great weekend, everyone!

  1. I also live with a vegan. We get along fine and she likes to cook some stuff for us to try to get us to try new things. You will be fine but you will learn (which I’m sure you already did in your “experiment” that there seems to be something wrong with everything. By wrong I mean meaty. You’ll love it!

  2. I can’t believe Christmas is so soon! I haven’t bought a single gift yet either. Ah! I think I’m going to start shopping today/right this second.

  3. I haven’t bought any gifts yet either! I keep telling myself I need to get on that, but somehow I keep procrastinating anyway…

  4. I too have not started my Christmas shopping yet. I like the pressure of waiting until the last minute (or so I try to convince myself!)

When I crush graham crackers, I put them in a plastic bag and roll a rolling pin over them, it seems to work well!

Good luck with the new roommate!

  5. I’m horrible at choosing gifts, too. I always get so nervous, wondering if the person will really like it or not.
I grew up with a dessert recipe that required graham cracker crumbs, too. We always just put the crackers in a ziplock bag and then used a rolling pin. never a single injury.

  6. I used to make this pumpkin cheesecake that required grinding gingersnaps into crumbs. It was almost always a real pain until I figured out that a food processor or a blender is perfect for this task. Now it’s one of the few things I actually USE my food processor for! Basically, you just break the cookies/crackers into pieces, toss them in, and then pulse the food processor. It takes a few minutes because you usually need to stir it and move the crumbs around so the bigger pieces get ground up, but it usually gives me a pretty even crumb. And it makes you feel more accomplished than buying the stuff in a box!

  7. Oh lord, I still have to purchase all my gifts too! I usually wait till the last minute, and do a massive Target run.

Clearly gift-giving is NOT my forte.

  8. Thanks for all the comments on the graham cracker crushing! I had other friends give me similar advice. It’s one of those stupid things you don’t think to question while you’re doing it – haha.

Side note, they were a BIG hit at my housewarming. Quite tasty. Mmmmm :-)
