IN THE RAW

Veggie Chick talked about raw food diets today, and provided a link to this guy named Steve Pavlina who is eating all-raw foods for 30 days. Looking at some of his recent posts, it’s amazing to see all the changes a body goes through (both good and bad) when it’s going through that kind of detoxification. And as a vegan, he was already a healthy eater before he started – so just imagine what eating that way would do to someone who eats junk all the time…

Eating only raw food for 30 days makes #99 on my 101 Things list seem quite paltry: Eat only raw foods for an entire day. Even though eating raw food for such a long time isn’t something I want to do, I like the idea of making 30-day changes. I’ve been thinking about implementing 30-day changes in my own life, so reading about other people doing it is a nice motivation.

(Speaking of 101 Things — my good friend Nadine just came up with a list of her own!)

  1. I know!!! I have been fascinated by the concept of 30 day projects for the last couple of weeks as well. I have even considered amending my 101 things list. I want to make myself do small changes for 30 days and then try to get the habit to stick that way. To do something so regularly for a month that it feels wrong not to do it at the end of the month. I’ve considered doing that for things like exercise (would like to increase workouts from my current 2-3 times a week), flossing my teeth (every day instead of every other day), and picking up after myself (every day instead of every month!). I think adding and keeping small changes can make a difference in anybody’s life, if they pick the right things.

  2. Hum, although I can eat raw food like raw fish for example, I think we need to be cautious about that because of bacteria salmonella and that kind of funny things you can catch from uncooked food. (got salmonella once and trust me, you don’t want that to happen to you)

  3. I have to admit I was a bit skeptical reading about his “withdrawal symptoms” during the first few days of the raw trial (I don’t doubt that he had the symptoms, but rather his attribution of them to withdrawal).

At any rate, maybe I should endeavor to complete a day of raw eating, too (just for fun, really, and maybe a little to vindicate my failed attempt all those years ago). Maybe we should be raw-for-a-day buddies. :)

  4. Does raw equal cold? Is that a stupid question? I just prefer hot food over cold so much, even in warm weather.

  5. I think raw foods for 30 days would be TREMENDOUSLY hard. I can’t even imagine. Buy I like the idea of other 30 day challenges

  6. Oh, I’m definitely checking out those links about the raw food diet. Actually, eating raw food for TWO days is on my 101 list.

  7. 30 day changes is a good window… long enough to make you have to make a real change, but not too much as to seem overwhelming or super daunting.

That being said, I don’t think there’s *any way* I could switch to eating raw foods for 30 days. So much socially hinges on eating… I think I’d go nuts. More power to you if you opt to change that day into thirty!

  8. I followed a completely raw diet for 30 days in November of 2006. I did not have any real withdrawl symptoms except for missing junk food. I felt very energetic after the first week but the diet was too socially isolating. It was a great transition into a mostly vegetarian diet.

  10. maybe you (we?) could start a 30 days challenge project. people can pick anything they want for the 30 days, but we all sorta do it together?

  11. I went through some withdrawal symptoms, when I started just eating less crap back in 2006, never mind going raw! Happy to say that my current detox is going well, no withdrawal symptoms, cravings are relatively under control (okay, I did a little sneaking yesterday), and already feeling and looking better at Day 5 of 21.

You have to be really dedicated to do something as intense as going raw. My girl friend’s sister and her husband are raw foodies, and they have 8 kids (who don’t eat raw)… it’s tough enough on one’s own, imagine doing it with 8 kids?!
