THE RAW DAY

Halfway through my day of eating only-raw foods yesterday, this crazy dude I know told me that water is boiled during the treatment process, so technically I had consumed something that had been heated at a high temperature. I said I wasn’t sure about that, but I was going to continue drinking water anyway.

I did miss my morning coffee. I didn’t get a headache, but I did have a pressure in my temples that lasted from late morning through early evening.

What food did I crave the most? Cereal. (I’ve said here before that I’d be okay with eating cereal for every meal.) I usually eat Kashi Go Lean, but I also like mixing it with All Bran and Grape-Nuts and eating the combination all at once. Yum!

I made it through the day without getting too hungry, but I felt like I had to eat a LOT of fruit to feel satisfied. If I count up all the calories in what I had to eat, I think I came up just a few hundred shy of what I would normally eat in a day.

What did I eat? Mostly fruit. Here’s the breakdown:

1 container of strawberries
3 apples
2 bananas
2 pears
2 mangos
1 8-oz. bag of sugar snap peas
½ head of cauliflower

  3. wow, that takes some willpower! I would have caved by 9:30am and probably stolen cheerios right from my kids’ spoon! :)

it does sound good though…and I’m proud of you for making it through the day.

  4. Wow, I like fruit and vegetables… but a lot of other things too. That eating plan takes some serious will-power and dedication!

It sounds like getting protein might be a bit of a challenge, but I’m sure you’re figuring something out.

  6. Oh yum! I’m a sucker for fruit… I love fruit… It’s gotta be the island girl in me. I plan to bump up my fruit intake as soon as detox is over as well.

Good for you, Zan! How do you feel? You must feel really light… I usually do after a good fruit day. :)

  7. If you can get your hands on some raw almonds or other raw sources of high protein foods, those are very satisfying and keep your tummy warm so you don’t feel so hungry.

And water is water. It’s the same water in the oceans and wherever. It doesn’t require enzymes, so drinking boiled water, distilled water, or filtered water is not like eating cooked foods, so you’re alright. :o )

  8. Wow kudos on making it through. I’ve found that broccoli is really filling. Also if you get creative and turn your raw fruit into shakes and such the psychology of feeling like you’re missing out on something will lessen.

  9. Great job! I’d break down and buy a bagel before noon.

  10. Hey Zan, are you going to do this on a regular basis or was it a one-time kind of thing? I desperately need to eat more fruit and veggies…but I find that if it’s all I eat, I just don’t feel full. Now, those baby carrots, they do fill me up, but I don’t think I could deal with just those.

And salad, for me, often just leads to dressing….Sigh.

  11. We’ve been saying for months that we need to incorporate a larger proportion of raw food into our diet, but we haven’t quite gotten there yet. We may need to look into getting a cookbook for inspiration–there are a surprising number of tasty, creative raw dishes out there.

To Laurie–I imagine coming up with a raw dressing, depending on what kind of dressing you’re willing to eat, would be pretty easy–something whipped up from a fresh fruit juice, for example? I’m sure a quick Internet search could provide some ideas.

  12. I have a friend who does raw-food on the weekends – apparently she’s a big fan of it! I’ve had a few rawfood experiences – my favorite is a recipe for “power balls” made from natural peanut butter (some organic stores offer a grinder to make your own right there!!) and coconut. Mmm….

There are some good “pre-made” raw junkfood out there – cookies, brownies, granola bars of sorts. Wild Oats has a decent selection.

Like you, I wouldn’t make it long w/o my cereal!!
