there are many online sites for legal doc. such as wills, etc. but, unless you have "more complicated issues" you can simply make your own, using one (as a guideline) on loan from a friend. a good way to save money if you are talking only money's and property item's. you know, this and that to he and she...that's about it.

Truth be told, we don't have a will, and it doesn't matter in Chile. They have laws about who assets automatically go to that override wills (I know, insanity right, and part of everything goes to the state, it's such a fucking rip off!).

Good for you Zandria! As an HR person there's nothing I find more disheartening than people who have no one to designate as their beneficiary - people who've never thought about it more specifically. Life doesn't promise us anything and it's our duty to make anything that happens as easy on our families as possible.

Also, are you willing your blog to anyone? Hahah.

My situation is unusual and possibly not completely relevant, since I'm a single guy, age 33, and rather alone in the world. I have family, but I'm essentially estranged from them.

I've honestly just figured that if I die, it doesn't matter what happens to my money, seeing as I have no one I'm close to. I'm not even sure who I'd tell that I had a will, so they probably wouldn't find it anyway.

A depressing story, I guess. Fortunately, on the internet one can be anonymous.

i agree with that article you linked to, which says that the most important legal document for EVERYONE is a medical power of attorney/living will.

note that the documents (for wills, living wills, etc.) you need will vary from state to state so if people are using online forms they need to make sure they are correct for their state.

I didn't do my will until I had kids, but I think it's very wise. Sadly, I just lost a single friend - now his parents need to decide what he wanted. It's difficult and emotional and more than they should have to think about right now. :(

I watched last year some family members go through a horrible situation because another family member didn't have a will...made me realize everyone should have one, even if you are single.

I love Suze Orman, her FICO kit is great too, I have been using that for 2 years now. I am now going to check out the online Will & Trust kit you mentioned!

You should definitely have a will! When my mother's grandmother died (when I was a kid) she did not have a will and all her children & grandchildren fought tooth & nail over all her stuff. No one wanted to be in charge of throwing stuff out...

Don't sweat the small stuff, but be certain that the really important things are assigned to someone! At the very least, talk to someone you trust (possibly your sister) about being in charge of handing out your stuff!!

We'll like to keep you around for a while, though!

Interesting post, Zandria. I love that you're preparing for the future in such a pragmatic way.

I usually don't think about these things, particularly because I don't own a whole lot. But now that I'm married (and will eventually have kids, hopefully) I really should begin this sort of planning.
