I Ate Bison

Some people might be thoroughly shocked by the following news: I went to Ted’s Montana Grill in Alexandria this weekend, and I ate a bison burger. It was the first time I’d had red meat in…seven years? I don’t remember the exact date, but I’m pretty sure it was sometime in 2001. It was good, and it didn’t upset my stomach.

When I told my mom about it on the phone yesterday, she offered to make venison for dinner when I visit Richmond next weekend (she and my stepfather don’t hunt, but they know people who do and they’ll keep the meat in a big freezer and cook it up from time to time). So I said, sure, why not? I haven’t had venison in at least 15 years.

Yesterday afternoon I took the metro into DC and paid a visit to the National Geographic Museum. I have to admit, it was a disappointment. It was just one large room, on the ground floor, and the entire exhibit was about frogs. For someone who likes frogs more than I do, it might have been interesting – but I only spent about 10 minutes there before I was ready to go. (This does, however, fulfill #67 on my 101 Things list.)

I’m also giving blood tonight after work. This will be the third time since I started 101 Things, so I’ll be able to cross #3 off the list (Donate blood at least 3 times).

  1. aww, damn, that sounds like another thing I really would have loved.

Lame that it’s only one room. And you have to pay? I hope you didn’t pay too much!

You are making great progress on the list, and I am impressed.

  2. Leah: The museum was free! So I wasn’t upset about making the trip out there. It cost me a few dollars to take the metro there and back, but it was a beautiful day and I had a good time walking around outside, so it was all good.

  5. I usually don’t eat red meat but bison does sound interesting. Good for you for giving blood. I used to all the time until two years ago i passed out and then i felt awful and sick. I’ve been scared to go back ever since.

  8. Bison is good — and lean! I don’t love venison, but grew up eating it and elk all the time, thanks to good ol’ dad and his hunting skills :)

  10. I went through a period of six months once without red meat (not that I indulge regularly – because it’s actually rare for me). It was a very easy change for me, and actually re-trained my body on the foods it craves.

Anyhow – I love all types of food. (But you know that – ha ha). Bison is NOT one of my favorites though. But I am so glad you tried it! I am not sure what this 101 things list is all about – because – as you know I cannot get the links to work on the site, and was only able to get here by some very fancy foot work – BUT if I had a list, it would be a list of motto’s. And one of them is “Try anything once” – well, almost anything.
