Who Wants a Free Bike?

(This contest is now closed. The winner is Judi from Miles and Madness!)

Courtesy of Lipton White Tea and the Free Your Y campaign that launched yesterday, one lucky reader of this website will win a free Fuji Crosstown 2.0 bicycle.

What do you have to do to win?

Leave a comment on this post, telling me one of your favorite ways to stay active. It can be as simple as taking a walk after dinner, or you can tell me about how you’ve climbed Kilimanjaro.

How many times can you enter, and when does the contest end?

You can enter only once, and the final date for contest submissions is May 11th. After that, I’ll use a random number generator to determine the winner, and I’ll notify you via email to claim your prize.

Does Zandria get a bike, too?

I wish! The nice folks at Lipton did send me a “White Tea Experience Pack,” which included a ready-to-drink bottle of Diet Peach Papaya (very good), a box of 5 To-Go Sticks (also good), and a box of Hot White Tea bags (haven’t tried those yet).

(However, Zandria very much wishes she had a bicycle! If she weren’t so ethical, she might put a few thousand entries on this post for herself. Hahahahahaha…!!!!)

Would you also like to win $25,000?

Unfortunately, you’ll have to do more than just leave a comment. Visit the FreeYourY page on YouTube for more details.

Disclaimer: The Pepsi/Lipton Partnership will provide a check for $75.00 to be used for professional assembly of all Lipton Fuji bicycles awarded. Neither Pepsi Co. nor Unilever is liable for any injuries, damages or accidents that may result from the receipt, assembly or use of this bicycle.

  1. oooh I want it SO MUCH! Random number generators NEVER pick 1… but I’ll be the first commenter anyway.

I stay active by finding a reason to be active.

Many people’s reason is to lose weight or tone up… mine is to satisfy my competitive streak.

I love competitive sports so I play in recreation leagues of soccer with friends at or above my level to challenge myself. I also really enjoy to satisfaction of reaching goal, so I started running.

Then I wanted to challenge myself to finally learn to swim well, so I took lessons and then got a training coach and since I can swim and run, I figured I might as well do triathlons.

Then I started getting over trained and injured, so I started doing weights to prevent injury. I discovered how good it feels to be strong, and I feel in love with weight training.

I keep a written schedule so that I force myself to stick to a training plan, and I record my running times to keep pushing myself to work harder.

I love getting new people into sports, so I’ll go running with anybody any time they ask! I take my younger brother mountain biking to teach him technique (he recently joined a racing team) or I’ll go running around the creek with my other little brother, looking for tadpoles. An after dinner walk is a great time to chat with my mom, or just walking home from the train station instead of getting picked up is great exercise (And with weather this nice? How could I not?)

I continue to stay active by continuing to challenge myself and setting new goals (like your push up challenge- I did 6 this morning! New record!). I also reward myself with giant tubs of ice cream or new work out clothes every so often!

  2. That bike looks pretty nice! Sorry that you are missing out on winning one for yourself Zandria!

As to staying active…I sign up for Triathlons which helps me stay focused on my training and makes it easier to get out of bed and head to the pool at 5am every morning, because there is no way that I want to show up at a race and find myself ill-prepared to finish! I never mind working out once I get in the pool, but the getting out of bed is definitely difficult!

  3. Well, for cardio I do salsa or swing dancing. It’s much more interesting than jogging on a treadmill. Plus, the view is better.

I also do jiu jitsu instead of weight training. It’s a pretty intense workout and unlike lifting weights, doesn’t get boring. When you workout with weights, sometimes it can get really boring and difficult to stay motivated. But when someone is trying to break your arm or choke you unconcious, it’s easy to stay focussed and motivated.

  4. I’ve been wanting a bike for some time now! I wish you were getting one!

To stay active – recently a friend from work and I have been using our lunch break to walk and do various exercises…this makes us bring our lunch and not eat out! its a great way to get some extra energy for the afternoon :)

  5. Seriously? How did this come about?

In any case, it is still worth mentioning that my favorite way to stay active is to play a sport. For me, that’s ultimate frisbee. Since I have a team depending on me, I am loathe to skip games. The sport also encourages me to get in shape so that I can be a better teammate.

  6. I’ve been running for the past 2 months 3-4 days a week. Just yesterday I finally worked up to the 3 mile mark (in a little less than 30 mintues)!! I finished it off with 6 stair drills sets. I’m getting ready for a 10K I signed up for on June 14th and I’m so pumped about it that running doesn’t feel like a chore. For example, today is my break day and I’m thinking of what I can do when I get home since I’m not running today. I’ll be following a routine I have that includes 5-8lb. weights and my exercise ball that lasts 30-45 minutes. Then I’m walking to my friend Teresa’s house for dinner at 6 (it’s probably a mile & a half there and back).

Jeff currently has Devin’s bike at his house and he has plans to get both his and Devin’s fixed up (new chains, etc). So now I need to get a bike so I can ride the trails with them. I’ve been shopping but might wait until after this contest just in case… :)

  7. My husband and I love to go on walks together, especially during this time of the year. Spring is such a wonderful time to be outdoors. But all the trash that the white snow covered is now melted. So we arm ourselves with trash bags and gloves when we go on our walks. It’s a double bonus: being active AND taking care of our earth!

  9. Oh yes! I sure would like a new bike!

And, interestingly enough, the way I stay active is BIKING! I bike to school and back, to the bookstore and back, to lunch and back, to dinner and back, to the coffee shop and back, to the market and back….

Today, I biked two miles against the wind, which is always awesome.

  10. Ooo, BIKE! I go to the gym, but since I’m so, so busy lately, that part of my day often gets skipped. Which sucks.

So I’ve taken to dancing when doing practically anything alone. Usually when cooking dinner every night. You’d be surprised at how much you can get your heart rate up that way!

I also hop around like an idiot doing calf-raise type things when waiting for a bus at the bus stop.

  11. Dude, I want a free bike!

I live in the city so I get lots of walking in every day. And I try to do at least 30 mins of torture, I mean exercise, every day on my elliptical machine. :)

  12. OMG pick meeeeeeeee! I just moved to a very bike-friendly city (Munich), and I keep thinking that I should get me one of those contraptions. Hubby is a big cyclist, but I’m one of those people who barely knows how to ride one (though that will have to change soon!).

Right now my main activity is walking – I walk all over this city! Combined with great public transport, it gets me everywhere.

  13. I swing dance and Yoga… swing dance keeps me super active, and Yoga relaxes my overdriven mind…. other than that, does lifting scoops of ice cream to your mouth count as exercise? I’m practically a personal trainer in that (gotta love a balance) :)

  14. Wow…I would love to win a bike. I tried my old one not too long ago that was at my parents house, but it was not in good shape at all!

I like to combine my love of nature and beautiful scenery with walking. My favorite place is Maymont, but any park or scenic place will do. Plus, I get to throw in a little photography. :)

  15. I would love to win a bike. I keep active by going to a boot camp fitness class 3 times each week, and then I also go running 2 or 3 times per week. I’m going to be running my first half marathon in October.

  21. To stay active, i do laundry.

The Laundry Room is quite a distance from my Studio Apt here at the Terra Studios artist community, plus it is up hill the whole way.

I also use this time to take a brisk walk during the wash cycle (30 min) and then a jog around the pond during drying (70 min).

  22. Hi Zandria,

Regular reader, first time commenter. Janet said I had to enter or never again complain about wanting a new bike.

I stay active training for and participating in triathlons. I log a lot of hours on my bikes; I’d dig a new set of wheels for riding around town. :)

  23. I found your blog through DC Blogs and read it all the time! This contest is awesome.

To stay active at work, I take the stairs and volunteer to run errands to nearby offices for coworkers.

I’m training for my first triathlon, so that keeps me active swimming, running, and road biking on a regular basis.

  24. Awesome blog and great contest!

I stay active by working out regularly at the gym, a national chain conveniently located next door to my office. Even if it does smell like dirty socks and sweaty old men, it’s much better than the alternatives for those who have fresh makeup, perfect tans and don’t sweat when working out.

I also play on indoor and outdoor volleyball teams, both competitive and social leagues, throughout the year. The team camraderie helps make the exercise we’re getting a lot of fun!

I also travel a lot, so it’s important to always pack my workout gear and shoes in my suitcase, no matter matter how much/little room I have for them. If I don’t bring the gear, I won’t be able to workout if I have the time and energy.

  25. I stay active because my dog is great at guilt. There’s nothing sadder than him looking at his lead and me trying to justify not going on a walk, so we don’t play that game anymore and go on at least one 30 minute walk a day.

  26. Oooh, a free bike? ;)

To stay young I figure the best thing to do is to keep an appreciation of life, to remember how to have fun.

Children have a much better sense of fun than most adults, but I remember my grandmother coming to visit. 90 years old and in a wheelchair, but the first thing she wanted to do when she got off the play was head for the race track so she could gamble. She was always up for doing something fun. I want to be that alive when I’m her age.

  27. Zandria, you are one funny writer! To stay young I am all about skateboarding and since summer is coming soon I also love water sports, swimming, wakeboarding, tubing, treading water for hours. I can’t wait for June! Also a perfect time to take the bike out for a stroll!

  29. I try to set goals, reasonable goals, like a 5k in 3 months…then get a friend to accompany me and sometimes prod me on when necessary. After achieving one fitness goal, I choose another, slightly more challenging goal and work towards it. That, and bathing suit season, help me to stay fit and healthy. Laughing keeps me young.

  31. Thank you for the opportunity, Zandria. I go to the gym four to five times a week and do 30 minutes cardio and 30 minutes of weights per visit. I am also training for a half-marathon that will occur in October, so the bike would be a great way to cross-train in the beautiful neighborhood that I live in. Thanks again!

  32. i would love a free bike!

I stay active by challenging myself. Last spring/summer i ran because i was training for the marine corps marathon, in the “off season” i did a variety of classes at the gym that i work part time at – pilates and spinning mostly.

This year? I’m training for a triathlon. Except i don’t have a bike yet. Once i buy (or win!) one, I’ll be biking to work a couple days/week from capitol hill to crystal city in VA. Lately, I’ve been trying to swim 2-3 times/week during lunch to start my training. I need to get back into running but my knees aren’t great so i’ve been working them into it more slowly…

  34. Currently, my favorite way to stay active is Pilates class then cardio and light weights on Saturday mornings at my local Y. It’s such a perfect way to start the weekend and clear my head after a long week. I think of it as my two-hour weekly detox :)

  35. I exercise after work, usually 5 days a week…I have a tv mounted on the wall of my basement (on a swivel arm) and around it circle my exercise mat…weights…and treadmill. I swivel as needed, to make sure I can see the tube from any of my workout stations (oh, the time passes so swiftly, when I am distracted!!)…and it’s amazing that even after a difficult day at the office, when I workout, I feel better, and more invigorated and alive than I did, even after waking in the morning…I could not NOT workout, and still be happy. The best workouts are the ones when–maybe 1-2 times a month–I get home too mentally exhausted to even consider heading down to the basement…so I go upsatirs…watch tv or read, and then, and from deep inside my subconsciousnes, I become aware that my body has decided without parlance with my brain that I MUST not skip a workout…my body knows I will feel better if I just go down and walk a few miles or lift a few weights, or stretch a few stretches. And when I finish one of these subconsciously-motivated and mandated workouts, I feel so happy, and proud, and content with the world.
(And I entered, Z, so that, should I win, I can donate the bike to you…I hope that that is ok, and within the rules. If I cannot do so, please delete the entry, or withdraw my name from competition, okey-doke? :) ). Be well, oh-ripped-and-beautiful-one, CR

  36. I wanna free bike!

My favorite activity is actually very simple: I walk to work every day, and home for lunch (nearly 4 miles total). It keeps me warmer (even when I’m walking in cold and wind), makes me feel better, and helps me not go crazy when the weather is too crappy to do anything else outside.

    Posted April 25, 2008 at 11:45 pm #
  37. My favorite way to stay active is playing tennis. i hate running so tennis helps keep me fit without wanting to die. The bike looks amazing by the way.

    Posted April 28, 2008 at 3:09 am #
  38. I lift weights and run all year round. Outside running in the good weather and on the treadmill in the winter. But that’s all maintenance workouts. For fun I love mountain climbing and skiing. Staying in shape makes those activities a lot more enjoyable.

i stay active by running on the cross country and track teams at my university…and biking to class. it keeps me busy but it also keeps me sane with everything else i have on my ‘to do’ list by providing a routine and some structure to the day.

  41. I would love a bike! I wanted to start a new way of getting my cardio in for the summer!

My favorite way to exercise is to pole dance.
Yes, I said. I recently completed Level 5, swinging yourself in mid air and flipping upside down and balancing…works wonders for your body!

I highly recommend it that people try it at least once in their life time. Other than that, I run, kickbox and throw in a modern or African dance class from time to time.

    I love creative movement!

  44. What keeps me active, is thinking all the time, and being always on the move. I recently realized that I can’t even stand still while I brush my teeth. Instead, I keep walking in circles in my small bathroom.
I am in a good shape, even though I don’t exercise. I don’t know if that’s due to my continuous activity or what. I need a bike for a healthier shape!

  49. I want a bike!
To stay youthful, I like spinning around the living room with my two year-old until we both get dizzy and collapse or until “daddy” tells us to calm down. My son loves bike rides in his trailor but I could really use a new bike now that I’ll have to tow two kids in July. :) I also teach swimming lessons. Nothing makes you feel younger than blowing bubbles and singing motor boat a hundred times.

  51. Hi!
    I’m a sporty girl.
I’ve played tennis for 10 years, but two years ago I had to stop playing because of a problem on the muscle of my right arm.
Now I usually go to the gym twice a week; in my free time sometimes I play basketball (I love this sport!); I’m also a basketball referee (I usually have two games during every weekend of the basketball season).
During spring and summer I usually stay active by running near the sea and biking with my friends.

  52. I do walk a lot, I live relatively close to the city center so I often just walk downtown (takes me about 20 minutes to get there), and I used to run and I really want to pick up that again. I also did yoga in Germany and may be picking that up again when I go back as well. And I want to do dancing too when I go back.

  53. I keep active by doing exercise videos at home. It isn’t super exciting, but it is the one thing I can stick to–the tv and DVD player are always there regardless of weather conditions, and I can always squeeze in a half hour somewhere! Thanks for the great contest!

  54. I LOVE pilates. It’s not the best for a cardio workout, but it’s great for toning muscles in conjunction with cardio workouts. I usually only do it once a week, but I swear by it! It gives me great abs and strong core, and I like it better than yoga.

  55. I decided to hook up with a personal trainer about a year and a half ago because I was so frustrated with myself and my weight. I had to get some sort of jump start. I especially needed the accountability.

For about 9 months I followed a strict menu and exercise plan. It was rough, but I lost 27 lbs. I have never been more proud of myself.

However, I haven’t seen my trainer since July and have been able to maintain my weight. I have found going to the gym can be very …um, not fun (although very rewarding). I now seek out activities that I look forward to doing and that keep me in shape.

Anything I can do outside works awesome for me. During the winter I go snowboarding as much as possible. Now that it’s warming up, I run around the park after work, I go to bikram yoga (it’s really hot and humid yoga), and have fallen in love with rock climbing. If the weather would fully cooperate I’d be outside climbing every evening.
I also head south for warmer weather to ride mountain bike trails with my dad.

Being healthy really has changed my perspective on so many things in life. I actually want to exercise and lift weights and feel my body be more energized. Now that I’m in better shape than I have been in a long time, it is much easier to say yes whenever anyone suggests doing something that requires physical effort. My body (and my brain and emotion well-being) craves activity now! Who knew?!?

    Posted May 9, 2008 at 2:51 pm #
  56. The main way I stay active is by running because it’s relatively cheap and eco-friendly. I also like to do yoga and pilates once in a while. I would love a bike so I could cross train!

  57. Ooo… sounds awesome! I’d love to have a bike, of course :)

I am currently saving a certain amount of money every month in the bank in order to buy my very own bike later January 2009, but getting one now won’t hurt ;)

Everywhere I go, I always ride my motorcycle. But it sucks my purse, as my country (Indonesia) always raises the price of transportation gas. So a bike is one sort of transport that’s gonna make me more thrifty, I suppose. And since I’ve been on efforts of living as green as I am able to be, definitely a bike can be my personal evidence of being green (though I live in a not-so-green country).

Thanks for the opportunity, Ms. Zandria :)
