Random Friday, Ver. 54

1) Remember when I mentioned that my neighbors were stomping all over the floor last weekend? I was really hoping someone had brought Dance Dance Revolution over for them to use temporarily…but no such luck. They’ve been stomping around above my head every night this week! Last night it got to the point where I gathered up my laptop and moved back to my bedroom — the consistent pounding was giving me a headache.

Maxie left a comment on that first post I wrote, suggesting my neighbors should “get the metal pad so that the floor doesn’t shake when you jump up and down.” Today I found an example of the metal pad online. I’m going to print this page and stick it to their front door. (Do you think I’m joking? I am so not joking.)

2) My older sister asked me if I’d bought a bell for my new bike (you know, to let people know I’m coming up behind them). She got a bell for her bike, and it’s not just any old bell…it also lights up.

I think a light-up bell is pretty nifty, but I’m not sure it’s quite my style. So far I’ve been veering around pedestrians without announcing my presence, but if I had to do something I’d be much more likely to shout, “On your left!” like I’ve heard other people do. I’m sure it won’t bother me once I’ve done it a few times. I’ve had plenty of practice warning people to get out of my way — for instance, I have no problem yelling “Excuse me!” when slow people try to stand on the left side of the escalator (ahhhh, commuting via the Metro…).

3) Speaking of sisters and bikes, I heard a rumor that my younger sister is jealous that Elissa and I have made our bike purchases and plan to ride together soon. She’s thinking about getting a bike, too. To that I say, “Hell, yeah! Watch out for three cute sisters on wheels!”

4) I had the day off work on Wednesday. When I went back yesterday there was so much stuff to do that I felt like I did two days worth of work in one. What will happen when I’m gone for three days in mid-July for the BlogHer conference? (Not to mention several weeks of vacation time I have saved up and just haven’t scheduled yet.) At least it’s nice to feel needed!

Who has something fun planned for the weekend? What are you doing?

  3. Upstairs neighbors can truly suck. And I’m glad you were able to take the day off though there was a lot of work waiting for you. Though, like you said, it is nice to feel needed!

The boy and I are going to a party tonight, a work thingy on Saturday at the lake and then watching the Euro Cup final. I’m really looking forward to it!

  4. I’m just going to relax this weekend; knitting, sleeping, baking and such fun things.

Here in Sweden it’s illegal to ride a bike without a bell! I don’t think you even can buy bikes here without bells, but I can’t swear on it.

  6. I hope your neighbours are receptive – mine occassionally play really awful dance music loudly, but the one time I dared ask them to turn it down, they did comply and were very polite.

I am going to see My Bloody Valentine tomorrow night! Very exciting.

  7. Bells rule!!!

Tonight I’m going to the last Friday Cheers on Brown’s Island then tomorrow I’m going to Philadephia for the weekend!! A friend a I are going to a Nikka Costa concert Sunday at a the World Cafe. The hotel we’re staying out had mapped out 3 & 5 mile running routes on their website. The 3 mile one (which is more my speed) circles around the famous Philadelphia Art Museum. You know the stairs in the Rocky movie?? Of course the route suggests that you try to run the stairs. Now that I’ve told you guys I guess I need to try it :)

  8. Hope you are enjoying the bike!

Weekend promises to be a fun one. Catching up with sister and a friend tonight at a restaurant I’ve been wanting to try, date tomorrow night at another cool new restaurant, and then Sunday I’m off to check out this local green market they do here once a year. Busy, but good. Hope you enjoy!

  10. I hope my bike is out of the shop soon and ready to ride; then I can go on cute girl bikerides with my sister too! Hehe.

When we lived in the Netherlands we all had bells on our bikes- they were TOTALLY necessary there. Everyone rides their bikes and if you don’t have a bell you’ll likely get yourself killed. So I always associate bells on bikes to being all cute and European:)

  11. I used to hate having upstairs neighbors. I think they used to jump over their kitchen counters for fun. I’m totally jealous of you all and your cute bikes!

  12. Please warn unsuspecting folks before you pass them on a bike (especially if they have dogs. My Jake will try to chase/eat/kill your bike). It’s courteous. The traditional “on your left” works for me. Anything works if it gives me time to prepare.

This weekend? Since the air quality is so bad I can’t exercise outside, I’m going to to gym. Talk about high excitement.

  13. Use your voice on the bike. On your left or on your right. Unless you a riding to the coffee shop- and have no desire to get there before noon.

  14. I really vote for the bell. As a runner who wear headphones I sometimes can miss the “excuse me” from some people, the bell is just such an off sound that it normally get my attention (I think that it is because I wear headphones at work to drown out noisy coworkers.
