Random Friday, Ver. 70 (Vegas Edition!)

1. A slip of the tongue

My friend Chantal is Dutch. Although she speaks very good English, sometimes she mixes up her words without meaning to. Earlier this week, after seeing our friend Lyndsey yawn she meant to say something along the lines of “Yawns are contagious.” Instead what she said was, “Your yawning turns me on.” As you can imagine, we brought this up multiple times over the next few days. (When I saw Chantal yawn the next morning at breakfast, I had to say, “Stop yawning, Chantal! You’re turning me on!”)

2. Fancy

We are dinner one night at a restaurant called Top of the World, located at the very top of the Stratosphere hotel where we were staying. The restaurant slowly revolves to give you a 360-degree view of Las Vegas. (One of the food-highlights? Lobster mashed potatoes. Yummm…)

3. Attention-getting

I dressed for dinner in my brand new, ultra-sexy, knee-high black boots (they barely fit into my carry-on suitcase when it was time to come home, but I made it work).

4. Entertaining

We saw the Blue Man Group. We sat in the very front row and had to wear clear plastic ponchos “just in case,” but luckily we didn’t get wet. They did hand out white streamers before the show (to decorate our ponchos with), so we did — along with everyone else in the first 4-5 rows. It was fun.

5. Fruity

Can you believe I’d never eaten a pomegranate before this week? I know, I can’t either. It was messy, but good.

6. Awwww….

When I arrived at the airport Wednesday night for my red-eye flight, the TSA guy screening my luggage through the x-ray machine handed me a rose. He said he’d been saving it for the next nice person who came through the line (are there really so many not-nice people?). As you can see, it was a little worse for wear…but it was sweet.

7. Sleepy

My red-eye flight wasn’t direct, so after I few hours I had to switch planes in Dallas. I only got the equivalent of a few hours sleep Wednesday night/Thursday morning, but there was one nice benefit: on the last leg of the flight from Dallas to DC, I was in a row of three seats all by myself. After we got up in the air, I pulled up all the arm rests and stretched out across all three seats. Much more comfortable than leaning my head against the window like I normally do.

8. Brrrrrr!

It’s gotten colder here since I left last week. Not such a nice welcome-home!

9. Yesterday

After I got home yesterday morning, I drove down to Richmond to get my hair highlighted and trimmed (100 miles). When I reached the salon and the employees caught a glimpse of my red-rimmed eyes and dark circles, they immediately supplied me with coffee to get me through the next few hours. Then I turned right around and drove back up to Alexandria. I slept from 9:30pm to 7am this morning, so I’m feeling a little better.

10. While I was gone…

The oh-so-lovely Zipcode gave me a Superior Scribbler award. She’s so sweet.

She’s hosting a Halloween party tomorrow night, which I’m going to. It’s 70s/80s/Oktoberfest themed (what a combination!). I have an idea of what I’ll be wearing, but I haven’t finished buying everything yet — I’ll finish that up today and tomorrow.

Happy weekend!

  3. English is my second language as well, and one humid day I meant to say I felt sweaty and instead I said “I’m moist”. That was TWO years ago. I still have not heard the end of it.

  4. you are crazy to go to richmond just for a hair appointment. you know we do have good hairstylists here in the dc area!

the red eye with a stop back from vegas is rough. i’ve done it a number of times (after a weekend that was pretty rough itself!) and gone straight to work from the airport. i still love a weekend in vegas, but i don’t think i can do that anymore.

  5. Classic Jen: The same guy has been doing my hair for almost ten years. I trust him, he does great work, and he’s also a friend (we went to high school together) — so seeing him every three months is our chance to catch up since we don’t hang out together otherwise. He also charges me less than I’d pay somewhere else, so it’s completely worth it! :)

  6. Hope there’s a photo of your Halloween costume!

So sweet about the rose. And I love it when people make mistakes in another language- it makes you appreciate the value of language and just how complex it is!

  7. The not-so-nice people of Vegas…maybe because they’ve all lost their money gambling…although we had a really quite good conversation at the ticketing with another couple – while we waited for someone to show up – they had been bumped and had to spend three extra days in Vegas…well…compared to coming back to Wisconsin, maybe that really was something to be happy about!

Halloween party – have fun! We have one this evening – my wife and I will both be dressed as pirates…Arrr!!

  8. ha! I wish I had someone to share the yawn/turn on comment with here…that’s too funny!

  9. ps it reminds me of the David Sedaris book, “When you are engulfed in flames.” Read it? The title is something he read in a poorly translated japanese-to-english instruction manual for fire escapes.

  10. awe, once again, it sounds like vegas was a total blast.

i love the rose, especially because you received it for smiling. that’s perfect!

aren’t pomegranates DELISH? i love them. expect, i brought one to work earlier this week and then realized they are definitely a eat-in-the-comfort-of-your-own-home type of fruit ;)

  11. 4 years ago, I saw the Blue Man Group at the Luxor. I was one of the people selected from the audience. They stuck a camera in my mouth.

To this day, I don’t know what was so funny. They held my head back and I couldn’t see anything other than the one holding the camera. People around me were laughing. So, I assume something funny was on the screen. When I asked what was so funny about it, no one would tell me.

But it was an awesome show!

  12. Hmmm…I want to know what the audience saw on the screen for the commenter above. Didn’t he/she go with anyone that would tell him/her what happened?

I saw them several years ago and sat in the second row. I left there covered in mashed bananas! Gross, but it was fun time.

    have a great weekend!

  13. Haha! Oh, I am sure I mix up words too and sound like a complete fool sometimes.

You saw the Blue Man Group! Awesome!

  14. workout mommy,
No. I went alone. I was there for a week on business and none of my cheap coworkers were willing to spend the money on anything other than gambling. So, I only could ask the strangers around me and none of them wanted to talk to me.
    Aloha!

  15. You should dress up like one of Charlie’s Angels, 70’s style.

Knee high boots are hot. I have two pair and never ever wear them.

    The rose gesture, very sweet.

Red eyes – they suck ass.

Hair cut – can I ask why you drive 100 miles to get your hair cut?

  16. I’d like to stick my feet in your boots, with or without socks! No analysis, please!

  17. That was very sweet about the rose. I love when people do random sweet stuff like that.

  18. Oh geez, yes there are many not-nice people zipping through the airports.

Alas, I have found that Las Vegas has really nice (and cute) TSA dudes.

  19. Yes the BMG is entertaining…we had them at a corporate function, I’ve done the same thing on long empty flights, those boots sound dangerous, you drove 100 miles to get your hair done? Not judging as I would not put it past myself although is it because the place is so good?

  20. Ah, I love pomegranates! I always have to wear an apron and elbow-gloves when I eat them though. And I think the TSA screener was hitting on you. Were you wearing your sexysexy boots?? ;)

    Posted October 26, 2008 at 11:03 pm #
  21. Ooh, new boots … let’s see ‘em :)
Oh, and that Halloween costume sounded interesting too!

  22. How exactly do you eat a pomegranite? I’ve always wondered! Me thinks you need to do a post on that. Ha Ha! :)

    Posted October 27, 2008 at 3:58 pm #
  23. Carolina Girl: You break it open and eat the seeds! There’s a little bit of flesh inside, but (this particular pomegranate, at least) was bitter.
