My friend Janet (of the neglected blog Love is Blonde) used to feature these Love & Hate posts on an almost-weekly basis. I miss them (and her), so I’m dedicating today’s post to the lovely Ms. Blonde.
Love: the mini snowman that someone left on Suzanne’s car yesterday. She said, “Thanks to the anonymous mini snowman builder, I will smile all day.” I would have, too.
Hate: when people say things that are misguided, misinformed, and just plain wrong. In this case, someone said in a Momversation (I’m paraphrasing) that she was a girl before she had a child, and now that she’s a mother, she’s a woman. Thanks to Heather from No Pasa Nada for writing a post that brought this to the attention of fellow child-free women.
Love: friends such as Zipcode, who drove out of her way to pick me up and take me to work on a snowy Monday morning. (While I normally don’t mind the mile-long walk to the Metro, yesterday was not one of those days.)
Hate: blobs of toothpaste in the bathroom sink. (Clean up your mess! Gross!)
Love: receiving confirmation that I will be a bridesmaid again this fall (for the third time) when my little sister gets married. I speculated whether this would be the case, and as it turns out (which I learned when I went to Richmond this past weekend for a visit), Little Sister had just taken it for granted — assumed, if you will — that my older sister and I would be included in her group of bridesmaids. Which is fine, because I was already assuming that. But it was still nice to know for sure.
What do you love and hate?

I will never share a bathroom with another person again. This is my solemn vow…
I’m too much of a clean freak for that. Ok, maybe with the right girl, if she’s clean enough. Otherwise… ew.
i love snow days. i hate having to go to work when there is way too much snow on the ground. i prefer to enjoy snow while indoors in my warm, soft bed.
it was my pleasure and it was also nice to see you for a change!
Really don’t like globs of leftover toothpaste. But I do love snow days. I just wish I had had one yesterday.
right now i’m too groggy to love or hate anything.
i have to say, i think heather really overreacted. i watched the video and in context, it’s clear that she didn’t mean it the way the people on heather’s blog are taking it. it was a stupid thing to say, but i’m sure if i hung out on a mom-centric website, i’d hear stupid things all the time. i feel like for a child-free by choice woman to hang out on that website and then get her panties in a bunch over a statement like that, she basically went looking for a fight.
even if “woman-mom” did mean it the way it sounded, so what? maybe that one woman really feels like she didn’t become a woman until she had kids. honestly, if you are comfortable with your own lifestyle choices, you don’t need to worry about what one woman on a mommy blog thinks about it. it’s certainly not some public service for her to have “brought this to the attention of child-free women.” i would hope child-free women have better things to do than worry about stuff like this.
Great idea!
Love this idea too! I posted my loves and hates for today on my blog: http://silvermari.blogspot.com/2009/03/love-hate-tuesday.html.
Oh, wow. I don’t like that #2 hate either. Needless to say I don’t have kids.
I love evenings with my husband. Hate Brazil’s summer. It is so freaking hot. (PS. I am no where near a pool or beach)
” i feel like for a child-free by choice woman to hang out on that website and then get her panties in a bunch over a statement like that, she basically went looking for a fight.”
It’s not only that, though after watching the video, I agree, the “girl until motherhood” statement was more clueless than malicious, but Heather had every right to be angry. I already posted this once (and blogged about it about a week ago), there was an episode last month about childfree by choice websites — without one childfree panelist. Granted, it’s called MOMversation, but really, you think someone could have found at least one guest panelist without children. It would be like if I and other women without children decided to do a video blog about the proper way to discipline your kids.
I actually like the site, and there have been a few topics that have little to do with children — and that interest me. But, I have no delusions: I know I don’t belong there. And I think that last video made it more than evident.
Thanks for the post about the comment about being a woman. I was thinking about how on Mother’s Day here at my church they honour all women (and give us all chocolate) on that day because they feel that the qualities that mothers are meant to have – nuturing, caring, support etc etc are things that we all do, regardless of whether we are mothers or not. I tend to agree! That woman sounded silly and probably not overly mature before she had children herself. Grr people like that annoy me!
Hate blobs of toothpaste, too! At least now that I have my own bathroom, I know they’re my blobs (but I still try to go blobless).
Hmmm…I would say I love it when people open the door behind them for you. It feels like a smack in the face if they let it shut when you’re about to come through.
I hate it when people ONLY like to talk about themselves. Like if you’re talking about something, they’ll jump in with, “well, that happened to me…” The “one-uppers,” as I call them.
I can relate to the toothpaste blobs in sink! They need to invent some kind of machine that automatically swipes that up!
Awww! Mini snowmen! I love it! I will have to make one of those! What do I love? The pattern in the snow made by the icicles finally melting. yay spring!
Tooth paste thing happens with you too?..thought it was only me
Your friend should post the snowman thing on missed connections. SO CUTE!
okay okay you shamed me into it! lol
love: I finally blogged tonight! woo hoo!
hate: it’s midnight, and I haven’t done the dishes, and I’m not in bed. Need more hours
love: my new work friends
hate: not seeing my old work friends enough
Aw I like this!
While I hate that my boots got mucky today from walking, I love the slightly warmer weather that makes walking possible
