It's amazing how it took me having a child to realize that it is OK not to be a runner.

That walking is PLENTY :)

Walking is definitely therapeutic. My morning and evening walks with my dog are often the calmest, most enjoyable parts of my day. I listen to audiobooks on my iPod, talk to my grandparents on the phone, listen out for birds, etc etc. It's just a nice way to take a break from responsibilities for a little while. I also walk back and forth to campus (about 25 minutes each way), and I find that having that time to plan/process how to tackle my day is very useful.

I love to take walks by myself. Even if I derive zero cardio or fat-burning benefits from walking, I will still do it because like you said, it's the perfect time to 'turn-in' and tune out. It's free, there is never a lack of things to look at (especially in DC) and I never return from a walk thinking, why did I do that? (Whereas I might after oh, say, eating 47 cookies. ;-) )

Just a thought from dad. In my line of work i have in the past traveled in what was potentally dangerous situations. The one thing i tried to keep in mind was that, try not to alway's travel the same route. Switch up once in awhile. This being in case there are other's interested in your routine and can monitor each and everyturn you make and the time you make it. Just a thought. dad

Quite timely post! Matt's school has a faculty walking challenge for the next month, and they've all got pedometers. He and I have been going for evening walks or bike rides to help him rack up big numbers (tho he does manage to get 8k steps or so in during the school day -- I guess he paces a lot when teaching). I really enjoy walking as exercise, since it doesn't really feel like exercise per se.

Hi!! I love walking too!. When I go to work I need to walk 20 minutes to get there since the metro station is pretty far from there but still it makes me feel a lot better since the air is fresh and the sun is not that strong. When I go home I prefer taking just one bus and walking for more or less 15 minutes to get there.

Walking relaxes me and clears my mind. I totaly agree with your post =).

Oh and btw , this is my first comment but I read your blog since more or less 2 years ago. I certainly love your posts and they always inspire me to live better and seek for new ways to improve myself. Thank you for your awesome posts! :D

I love walking! It's easy and if I don't feel like exercising directly, I can make it secondary to another activity. For example, I'll visit the zoo - I end up walking a few miles in the process of viewing the animals! And I love that I can take my dog along with me, so it's good for both of us :)
