Random Friday, Ver. 96

1) A tingly feeling

4/29: I was getting a tingling sensation in my hands and feet on Wednesday night. It would happen when I was doing random things around the apartment, but also when I went from sitting to a standing position, or that one time when my roommate burst through the front door and startled me. I was doing some research on it online, and it seems like there can be a number of reasons for this to happen to people — I guess it’s just worrisome to me because it’s the first time I can ever recall it happening.

Also, walking to work the next morning, it felt like a few of the toes on my right foot were numb. The numbness went away after walking for about 10 minutes, but it was a pretty strange feeling while it lasted.

I haven’t been to a General Practitioner in quite a few years (at least 7?), and I was still living in Richmond at the time. I figure it’s a good idea for me to find a new GP and go in for a check-up. When I had my blood pressure checked last week, it was 95/65, which is pretty darn low (my blood pressure is always on the low side of normal, but this was lower than I’ve ever seen it before).

I’ve also been interested in having my lung capacity checked, as I think I’ve been having more trouble taking deep breaths/getting air in my lungs when I’m exercising/walking than I should. (I’ve been finding it difficult/impossible to jog for more than a few minutes at a time. And even when I’m just walking fast, I’ll often have to pause and purposefully take a deep belly-breath so I can continue.) Weird, huh?

2) Killer!

4/28: My mom gave me a plant a few years ago, and now it’s dead. I almost didn’t admit it, because I think she’ll be sad…but it is what it is. When I rearranged the furniture in my bedroom, there was no longer a place to sit it where it would get good sunlight. There was nowhere else to put it in the apartment (my roommate has about 12 plants herself), so I…just let it go. The plant is dead and it’s my fault. I feel strangely relieved — watering plants is such a bother.

(Note to self: don’t ever become a gardener.)

3) Forgot to mention

4/17: two Fridays ago, I left work for a few hours and went to the U.S. Capitol to take a tour. My friend Tripp had a few family members visiting from out of town, and they said I could tag along.

This is Tripp’s grandma pretending to be a statute.

4) This weekend

I’m flying out to Jacksonville after work tonight and won’t be back until late Sunday night. I was hoping to pack light (which I did, clothing-wise), but Tripp requested that I bring my laptop, so my bag is going to be a little heavier than I’d originally planned. I think it’s probably a good idea, though — I’m not familiar with Jacksonville at all, and I’ll be entertaining myself on Saturday while he takes care of a work event. It’ll be good to have a computer so I can look up things to do.

Happy weekend, everyone!

  2. My roommate is trying… tried to grow Basil. I did too. If we ever have to plant and grow our own food, I’m gonna need some major tutoring.

  5. Wow, this may be really inappropriate but I’m going to say it anyways… your friend Tripp is a good looking guy. That is not me trying to hit on him through your blog, promise. More of a general acknowledgement..

  6. When’s the last time you had your iron checked? I have chronically low blood pressure too (I average 80/60) and other than the dizziness I haven’t had those other symptoms. I have however been anemic and what you are describing TOTALLY sounds like low iron! Get thee to a clinic, girl;)

  7. I know there are eleventy bajillion different reasons for tinglyness in the limbs, but the primary reason I’ve experienced it before was a b-12 deficiency (pernicious anemia). However, like you, I skew toward the low end of the blood pressure spectrum, and doctors always tell me to get checked out ASAP if I start feeling numbness or tinglyness in my limbs. It could be something as simple as low blood pressure or a vitamin deficiency. Good luck!

Were you a runner previously? If not, the key may be to learn how to breathe. I wasn’t a runner before I went to my training academy but I learned from doing cadence to control my breathing. Maybe you ought to download some military running cadences that you can at least mouth along to if not sing so you can learn control. I recorded some and put them on my ipod and they seem to do the trick.

  10. I’m a regular reader who has never commented. But I feel obliged to chime in about the “tingling sensation.”

What you are feeling sounds like a problem with your cervical spine (the upper spine), which acts as a passageway for the nerves that control your fingers and toes.

It could be a herniated disc, which will usually repair itself, or something more troublesome. Since you once said you had a history of spine troubles (if I remember right) I would get this checked asap. They can do an MRI and see immediately what this is.

From experience, once you get around 35, this stuff can be debilitating, so it’s better to nip it in the bud. Unless you have a very strong resolve, tingling can drive you crazy. Good luck.
