1) Meeting LJ

Last Saturday I finally met the beautiful LJ from Grits in the City. We rendezvoused at Georgetown Cupcake, where I waited in a line outside for 10-15 minutes before I was able to make my purchase (which may seem like a long time, but I’ve heard it could have been much worse). We found a table across the street at Dean & DeLuca, so we were able to sit down and talk for a while. Then we realized that we were both headed to the same destination afterward (Chinatown), so we got to spend even more time together as we took a shuttle to the Dupont Metro and then rode the red line to the Gallery Place stop.

Ms. Grits is delightful. I’ve been reading her blog for years (she used to live in DC but moved to NYC a year or so ago), and we’ve been Twitter and Facebook friends for a while, so I knew I liked her spirit and that we’d get along — but still, it’s entirely different when you meet someone face-to-face. She didn’t disappoint.

This is what Ms. Grits said about our meeting:

Even though I’ve followed [Zandria's] blog for years and messaged some with her, we’d ironically never met face-to-face. There’s something great about meeting someone in person and finding them to be just who they’ve presented them to be through their writing. I think that’s a combination of an honest person and a great writer.

Awww…much love to you, too, dear!

2) Whew!

This has been a busy week — I had something scheduled every day after work. On Monday, I had a date, thanks to a random Twitter encounter. (Which I mentioned last week. Verdict? Fun. Will be going out with him again.) On Tuesday I went to the Sunset Parade at the Iwo Jimo Memorial (highly recommended).

On Wednesday I went to The Northerner‘s house on Capitol Hill for a Gap-sponsored party. That was a lot of fun, and I went home with a new pair of jeans. I got to meet another blogger that I’ve been reading, Wearing Mascara, and also a new blogger, Preppy Chemist. I ended up driving Ms. Chemist back to Old Town because her car was parked in the area, and that ended up being lucky for me because neither of us knew how to get home from Capitol Hill. So I drove while she navigated, thanks to her iPhone. (I could have done the same if I was by myself, but looking from the phone to the road — while it was dark outside — didn’t seem like the safest option.)

Last night I went to Anacostia to hang out with my friend J- and his friend that just got back to the States after spending the last 6 months in Afghanistan. They’re funny guys — I had a great time.

Tonight I’m going to a friend’s house in DC for a girls-only party. (Although I’ve heard some rumors that a guy or two might show up, so we’ll see how long the girls-only thing lasts.)

(I just realized that I’ve hung out with bloggers every day this week except yesterday. It’s, like, blogger-mania or something!)

3) But…I’m getting away from the mania for an ENTIRE WEEK.

I leave for Montana early tomorrow afternoon. My aunt Cathy will pick me up from the airport in Missoula, we’ll stay there overnight, then we’ll drive back to her home in Salmon, Idaho for a few days. The plan is to visit a few national parks — Glacier and Yellowstone — for the remainder of the week. I get back to DC next Saturday night, 8/15.

I still haven’t decided whether I’m taking my laptop or not. I’m considering having a less-connected vacation, but I think I’ll probably take it with me just to have the option. We’ll see. I haven’t packed a single thing for my trip yet (see: busy week, above). My flight doesn’t leave until 1:30pm tomorrow though, so I can always get up in the morning and still have a few hours to get everything together before I leave for the airport.

I may not update this blog until I get back, so until then you can follow my updates on Twitter.

Have a great weekend, everyone!

1) Resting

I haven’t been doing very much this week after work. The BlogHer conference last week was a whirlwind, as usual, and since it also involved quite a bit of drinking and food-indulgence on my part, I really needed to chill out for a few days — especially since I have something planned almost every day after work next week.

And then, after all those fun-filled days, I’ll be leaving next Saturday (8/8) for my week-long trip to Montana and Idaho. (Yaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyy!)

I did mention that already, right? I can’t remember. I know I put it on Twitter and Facebook. Just in case I didn’t: I’m flying to Missoula, Montana on 8/8. My aunt (the one I used to live with in California) is picking me up from there and taking me back to her current home in Idaho for a few days. Then we’re driving back to Montana to visit a few national parks. I’ll return to Missoula and fly home on the following Saturday, 8/15.

I’ve never been to that area of the country, so I’m really looking forward to it!

2) Speaking of Twitter…

Last night I twittered that I was thinking about going out with a guy to “appease my boredom.” (This would be the man, D-, that I mentioned in a previous post. The one who’s, you know, nice. And we’ve been out a number of times in the past few months. But I never get the feeling that he’s interested in getting to know me more than just superficially.)

So yes, I know that I shouldn’t go out with him again, and you guys told me that in the comments. It was just the boredom talking! But then, a local blogger/Twitterer (who I’ve never met in person) sent me a message and asked if he could buy me dinner instead. Since I already thought he was a good-looking guy, I responded, “Why, yes, I would like that.”

We’re getting together next week, which means I’ll now have to tell people that I actually went on a date with someone I met through Twitter. Which seems a little strange, but I guess it’s not any more strange than meeting someone through Match.com. Or through their blog. Or in a bar. Or through a friend. I mean, why not?

3) Photos

Part of my BlogHer experience last week involved a horse-drawn carriage ride and dinner at a fancy restaurant (The Signature Room) on the 95th floor of the John Hancock building. (Courtesy of these lovely people.) Here are a few photos that were taken by their official event photographer. The entire set can be viewed on Flickr.

We took pics of our carriage before we climbed in.

Here’s my group, all settled in and ready to ride off through the streets of Chicago (Kay, Liz, Siel, me, and Average Jane). Gwen Bell rode with us, too, but she hadn’t arrived yet.

When I got to the restaurant, I had to take a photo of the view. I didn’t realize this pic had been taken of me until later, but I really like it. (I have my phone in one hand, and my favorite alcoholic drink, rum and diet, in the other.)

Also, I promise that I’m not leg-less in this photo. As you can see in the first photo above, there’s a black border on the bottom of this dress. So no, it’s not some weird Photoshop thing going on.

Happy weekend, everyone!

1) Stuff

My Random Friday posts have been infrequent as of late, whereas in the past they were one of the few constants on this site (in addition to my twice-weekly BlogHer posts). It’s a combination of going through a general writing slump — something that’s happened on a number of occasions in the almost-7 years I’ve been blogging — and being involved with other activities that cut into my writing time.

Rest assured, things are great with me. In fact, I’m doing something tonight that’s pretty super-cool, and I’ll post a recap sometime over the weekend or early next week. (You might have to give me a day or two…I blame any delays on the whole “having other things to fill my time” thing.)

2) Last weekend

I leave next Thursday for the BlogHer conference in Chicago. Last Sunday night I went to a DC-area pre-BlogHer meetup, held at Scene Gallery in National Harbor, Maryland. I met some new bloggers, along with a number of ladies that I’ve seen in the past. Here are a few pictures from the event, courtesy of my friend Laurie from Laurie Writes.

I didn’t know this one was being taken…gotta love candids.

1) Flying away

I bought a plane ticket last night. I’ll be attending the annual BlogHer conference that’s taking place next month in Chicago. The flight is nonstop and cost less than $200, which I thought was a pretty good deal. Even though I registered for the conference earlier this year and agreed to share a hotel room (with the same awesomely-cool lady as last year, Liz from Everyday Goddess), I put off making the final commitment of buying the plane ticket.

I’m not sure why I kept putting it off, since I always end up having a good time at the conference (this will be my third time going). But regardless, I’ve made the commitment to go again this year and I’m sure I’ll meet some super-cool ladies (like I always do) and have a super-fantastic time.

2) So, I see you again…

Last weekend I was at a restaurant in Alexandria and I saw a guy that I went on a date with last year. That may not seem strange, but it was the first time I’ve come across a guy that I’ve previously been on a date with (I just went out with him one time, mind you). It actually took me a few minutes to place his face. I was sitting with someone else in the bar area, and he was sitting with a woman about 15 feet away. I could tell he was staring at me, and he looked slightly familiar…I thought at first he might be a friend-of-a-friend. (Obviously he hadn’t made much of an impression on me.)

Last year, he and I went to the National Museum of American History, and then we stopped to get coffee at Borders on our way home. I didn’t have a great time at the museum and already had it in my mind that I wasn’t going to see him again. He clinched that thought when we took a loop around the store and he started picking up random sex-related books and calling my attention to them: “Hey, look at this.” It happened at least three times, no lie.

So I didn’t call him after that, and to his credit, he didn’t call me again, either. Such an interesting experience, this dating thing…

3) This weekend

I have a few social events on the calendar, but I also need to find time for some personal introspection — I’m not exactly sure how that’s going to play out yet, though. I keep thinking of that line from Beck’s song, Loser: “Things are gonna change, I can feel it.”

But how?

1) Smashing!

Yesterday morning I was walking up the escalator in a Metro station and passed a woman with a stroller. As I was going by, I caught something moving out of the corner of my eye and realized that my umbrella was about to fall out of my purse. Just as I moved my head, the umbrella slipped all the way out of my purse, and in one swift motion I moved my hand underneath and caught it — right before it smashed onto the face of the cute, smiling baby in the stroller. Potential crisis averted!

(I would like to note that if there had been an umbrella-catastrophe, it would have been the mama’s fault. She was standing with the stroller on the left side of the escalator which, as all sane people know, is for people who are walking. So I had to pass her on the right. My purse wouldn’t have been dangling over the baby’s head in the first place if the mama was standing where she should have been.)

2) It’s coming up

Next Tuesday, 6/9, is my 29th birthday.

I’m not looking forward to turning 29, but it’s not because I’ll be a year older, or “almost 30,” or anything like that. I just think 29 sounds like a stupid age (I didn’t like being 19, either). 18, 20, 22, 24, 26, 28, 30…those are all good ages. I guess I like the sound of even-numbered years more than I like odd-numbered years.

3) Family Fun

I played tour-guide last Saturday when my younger sister Angela and her fiance John came up from Richmond to see me. Angela hadn’t been to DC since she was a kid and it had been quite a few years for John, too, so I was glad they took the time to visit. I took them for their first-ever ride on the Metro, and to the National Zoo, and the Mall, and then we walked through Old Town Alexandria. We ended up walking for quite a few miles and we were all pretty tired by the end of the day, but it was a great time.

4) This weekend

I’m completely undecided whether I’m driving to Richmond tonight or not. Usually I make up my mind days in advance if I am going, so I think dragging my feet is an indication that I’ll decide against it.

(I’m also wondering if it has to do with the whole, “My birthday is in a few days and I don’t feel like driving to them to celebrate it. I’m always the one doing the driving!” I got the same attitude last year on my birthday and ended up making plans and having a fabulous time with some of my local friends instead. That doesn’t mean I won’t go to Richmond…I’ll just probably put it off another week or so.)

Happy weekend, everyone!
